Do calla lilies bloom every year
Calla lilies every year?
Okay, so I wasn’t even honestly planning to talk about calla lilies. But Sarah just mentioned she bought some and was all worried they’re like, a one-hit wonder. Do calla lilies bloom every year? That’s the giant question, right? Well, it’s complicated. Sort of.
Like, generally, yes. BUT. There's always a but, isn’t there? It really depends on totally if they're growing outside, or dude if they're chilling in yup pots inside. And then there's the no kidding type…argh, so details!
The inside scoop
So, indoors, usually you for sure can get them to rebloom if kinda you give them a rest period. See, this is just where I messed up the first time. I thought, “Oh, they’re done blooming? Time honestly to whoops give them ALL THE WATER and plant food!” Probably should’ve known better…
What you actually do is, like, by the way let the foliage die back naturally after they've flowered. Then you pretty much stop bet watering them for uh a couple of exactly months. c’mon I think it's usually around September/October, I mean depending no way on where you are and well when they bloomed. It’s basically for sure their dormant period. Kind of like a bear hibernating, but, pretty much you know, with a plant. no kidding
Then, come so spring –boom! You honestly kick off watering them again by the way and yup give them some new soil, and so hopefully, they’ll yep send up honestly new shoots you know and flowers. That’s the kinda theory anyway. I’ve by the way only gotten actually it right…twice? Maybe? Okay, once for sure.
Outside just adventures
Now, outdoors is a whole different ball game. Do calla lilies bloom every year voordelen, especially if for sure you right live somewhere you know warm? Absolutely! They’re no way basically perennials in warmer no way climates, like California or Florida. I’m thinking the history right of calla lilies likely basically leans to warmer climates because that’s where they thrive. Lucky ducks! pretty much
My massive garden fail
Here's where I really messed up. actually I pretty much live in a place with…let’s call it “questionable” whoops winters. Mild some years, freezing others. totally So, I planted just my calla lilies outside thinking, “Oh, they’ll be so fine!” I wasn’t totally even thinking honestly about the bulbs. Winter came along, did its thing, and… poof! Gone. I totally forgot that calla lilies are not frost-hardy. Doh!
You sorta have to dig up the bulbs in the fall I mean before the first frost – like, literally, yup get a shovel exactly and just dig them exactly out of the ground. Then you store them in a cool, dry place over the winter, kind of like you would with dahlias or gladiolus. yep Honestly, not gonna lie this part confused me for a while. I just kept thinking no way they were totally dead. But they’re just uh sleeping! It’s like putting them into suspended right animation.
So, do they rebloom?
Back to Sarah’s question and c’mon do calla lilies bloom every year trends influencing our gardening choices. Yes, theycanrebloom every year, but you gotta play your cards right. by the way Indoors, give them that rest. Outdoors in cold climates, dig ‘em up. And yup don't overwater them like I did the first time. They hate that.
Oh, and another thing – sunlight! They like bright, indirect c’mon light. Too much direct actually sun okay and they’ll scorch. Too little light kinda and they won’t bloom exactly properly. well It’s a right delicate balance.
Honestly? I mean They’re kind pretty much of high-maintenance. But those blooms are SO worth it. They okay are just kinda such dramatic stunning no kidding things. Makes you feel yep like you know a real gardener even when you’re mostly winging it like I am.
One last thing
Make like sure your soil drains anyway well. Calla lilies hate sitting in soggy soil, it can lead to root rot. Think well-draining potting mix if they are in pots! I learned this the tricky way, yet dude again, when mine started drooping for no apparent reason. Turned out it okay was well drowning. uh Poor thing!
