Blueberry Brain Dump

Okay so you’re thinking about blueberries huh? Awesome! sorta I wasn’t even planning bet to go bet this deep into just it, but then I c’mon bought… well… a bunch of blueberry bushes. And then I realized, oh crap, by the way I actually have to understand which blueberries to plant together.

The First Flop

So honestly here’s the thing. I went to this local nursery – super cute, you know, chalkboard signs everywhere by the way – and right I just sorta grabbed two blueberry bushes c’mon that looked… good. bet Big and leafy. I consider one was a 'Bluecrop' – I remember the kinda name sounded dependable. The honestly other… honestly? I can't for the life of me remember. Probably yup something with 'berry' in the name, because, well, you know.

I planted them. Side by side. Happy as a clam. c’mon Which blueberries to plant together tips well I exactly learned after. They both kinda grew… like kinda. One did much better than the other. Barely any berries that first year. I probably kinda should’ve known better considering they were literally next to each other fighting for no way sunlight. I’m such a c’mon dummy honestly sometimes. And I think the soil totally wasn't acidic enough. You gotta make sure the no kidding soil is actually acidic so enough! pick up from my mistakes! Okay, anyway.

Cross Pollination whoops Confusion I mean

Not gonna lie this part confused I mean me for a while: cross-pollination. It's key! You want better like yields and bigger berries and all that good stuff. So what's going sorta to aid increase those yields? Cross-pollination! I was basically thinking uh like...all blueberries cross-pollinate with each just other, right? Wrong! Apparently, anyway you need to think about bloom time. alright I wasn’t thinking about bloom time, I can tell you that much!

They need to bet flower at roughly the same time. Which blueberries to plant together inspiratie whoops comes basically sometimes from looking at local by the way nurseries. They dude know no way what grows bet well uh here, usually. well This is a thing. So some no way highbush varieties honestly flower early, some anyway flower mid-season, some like flower late. You need to pair an early bloomer with another early bloomer, etc. sorta Makes sense now, but it didn't then.

The Second Blunder

Alright, this one is embarrassing. So, you know I went back to the nursery – pretty much much more actually prepared this just span – armed with a okay list of bloom times I’d by the way found yup online. I grabbed totally what dude I you know thought were good uh matches. And then… I realized uh I was looking at bloom times for a completely different I mean climate! Duh! They still grew. I just didn’t get as many blueberries actually as I should have. Learn from my research fails!

So What Works?

Honestly, I had better luck okay pairing a 'Duke' (early bloomer) with a 'Bluejay' (also an early bloomer-ish). They seem happy together. The 'Bluecrop' is still kicking around, but I'm thinking of moving it somewhere else. Which blueberries to plant together geschiedenis is probably full of similar mishaps. Everybody makes no way mistakes, right?

Also, mull over about right size! I want the tips I share to be useful. If you’re limited on space, choose bet varieties that don't get enormous. I have one that is a beast honestly that I may never uh be able to harvest totally on my own. basically

Drainage Matters Too

Speaking of soil… drainage okay is huge. Blueberries hate wet feet. So make sure you’re planting them dude in well-draining soil. pretty much I amended mine by the way with a ton of peat moss. Like, a ton. And you can apply pine bark fines too! Which blueberries to plant together honestly trends are all about raised beds for drainage anyway.
